Freelance income and expense tracking
Freelance cash feels random until income and expenses sit on one board. Then you see which month actually paid you.
Freelance income and expense tracking is how you stop guessing whether a busy month was a rich month. An invoice is not cash until it is in. A new mic is not “for work” until it has a category. When both sit on one board, you can say what you kept, not only what you billed.
Split the month into in and out
Put client payments in. Put software, contractors, tax set-asides and the cheap lunches at the coworking space in out. If you mix them in one list without a direction, the total lies. A good month can look average. A slow month can look fine because you delayed a tool bill.
- One income category per type of work, not per client if the list would explode
- A tax or buffer category you fill on the day money arrives
- Tools and subscriptions as their own out pile
- A name on the line you will still understand in April
Track when money moves, not when you sent the PDF
The invoice date is for the client. Your board cares about the day the sum landed. If you record billed work as income, you will spend money that is still in someone else’s account. Write the in entry when the payment clears. Keep a note in the name if you need the invoice number later.
The same rule works in reverse. A yearly app billed in January is an out in January. Do not invent twelve fake rows. If the month looks heavy, that is information: you prepaid a tool.
How Money holds a freelance month
Money by Integrono is a simple board of categories and in or out entries. No bank. No project module. You open the month, see freelance in, see spend out, and know whether the week was work or just noise. That is enough for a solo practice.
A close that takes fifteen minutes
On the last day of the month, add any missing lines, then look at in versus out. If out ate the in, name the category that did it. Set the tax buffer for the next payday before you book a treat. Freelance income and expense tracking is that close, repeated. The board stays small so you still do it when a deadline is on fire.
